Summer. The season of ice cream, beach trips and turning up the AC. Each year the average household spends a little over $2,000 on energy bills. If you’re looking to reduce these costs while keeping cool, here are a couple tips to get your HVAC system in shape for the summer.
Check Your Filter
A dirty air filter can wreak havoc on your HVAC system, causing it to work harder to perform its basic function and restricting airflow so that dust ends up recirculating around your home. Filters should generally be switched out around once a month during active use. By doing so, you can lower your AC’s energy consumption by up to 15 percent.
Remove Dust and Debris
It’s important to turn your AC unit off every once in a while to dust and wipe off the fan blades, as well as any other dusty surfaces in the interior and exterior of your unit. Debris trapped in the coils of the unit should be removed. The maintenance and TLC required to take care of this filth is a minor hassle in comparison to the consequences of obstructed airflow.
Flush Condenser Lines
The watery conditions of a dripping condenser line are ideal for algae and mold growth. If these are allowed to grow and obstruct the line, your condenser line won’t be able to fully expel the condensation produced from your evaporator coils, leaving the interior of your home vulnerable to humidity and musty odors. The most effective method for eradicating this gunk is to suction it out with an industrial-grade vacuum. You can add further protection by flushing the line out with algaecide or a warm water solution afterwards.
By keeping these simple maintenance tasks in mind, you can ensure your HVAC system keeps your home cool all summer long without costing you an arm and a leg in energy bills.
